Wandering around in the Klein Karoo, you might notice exquisite, shiny white rocks that stand out from the rest of the surrounding terrain. Rooiberg Wild Private Game Reserve offers visitors the opportunity to partake in Crystal Hunting, a nostalgic experience to enjoy as they explore the farm.

While hiking Leopards Gorge, crystals can be found mounted inside the rocks or in the river bed, waiting patiently to be discovered. Once you have found your first crystal, the experience of the hunt can become quite addictive and before you know it, you have embarked on an epic expedition to discover more of this hidden natural “treasure”.

Some people believe that these crystals amplify energy by absorbing, storing, releasing, and regulating it. It’s also said to aid concentration and memory. Physically, clear crystals are claimed to help stimulate the immune system and balance out your entire body. Whatever you believe, one thing is certain – they are amazing to behold.

Book your adventure at Rooiberg Wild Private Game Reserve today, and see what you can discover in the beautiful Klein Karoo.

Chef Willem Kruger Shares His Passion

Rooiberg Wild’s Chef, Willem Kruger, is a man with an undeniable passion for cooking. To get to know Willem better, we asked him a couple of questions:

What inspired you to become a chef?

It all started in my mom`s kitchen. My mother’s kitchen always smelled like cinnamon and ginger. Those aromas are what sparked my love for cooking. My mother was my mentor and inspiration for becoming a chef.

What do you love about cooking?

Good food has always been an important value in our family. For us, cooking involves playing and using your imagination, it is an expression of artistry. When it comes to combining tastes and flavours, smells and shapes, colours and textures, you never know what new experience might be just around the corner. If the flavours of your food have the power to touch people’s emotions and awaken their memories, you’ve hit the jackpot.

While working in hotels and game lodges for many years you are exposed to many different ways of cooking and it just helps one grow as a chef. I love cooking with fresh herbs and vegetables.

What is it like working as the chef at Rooiberg Wild?

The first day I saw Rooiberg Wild restaurant I knew I had found my home. I knew it was the place where I could pour my heart and soul into my menu. I am fortunate to have my own herb and vegetable garden where I can take advantage of the fresh produce on hand. The other ingredients are more difficult to source, due to our small-town location, but I overcome this by buying what is in season and planning my menu around what is available and of good quality.

People always ask what my favourite dish is and then I reply, “all.”

Someone once called my menu “unstructured”, which I take as a compliment. I don’t strive for conventional so that suits me well.

The Karoo is well known for its lamb meat, so that is a regular on our menu. There is nothing like a Karoo lamb chop on an open fire, the taste is one you will never forget.

A word of advice for someone looking to become a chef.

The essence of being a good chef is being open to the opportunities presented by fresh and unexpected produce and having the creativity to know what to do with it.

Touch two mountains – LEOPARD’S CLIFF HIKING TRAIL

rooiberg-wild-leopards-cliff_674x379

This picturesque hike lures you into the mountains with a walking trail that’s ever decreasing and the skyscraper cliffs on both sides of the riverbed.

Before you know it, you are there, walking the walk. Now, when we got a farm in Ladismith I thought the earth was flat and what do you know; it’s not. Mountains, mountains everywhere! The town of Ladismith, on Route 62 in the Klein Karoo, has so many mountains that it just begs for an International Mountain Climbing event!

The stunning and unique flora, called Succulent Karoo (they vary in appearance; from little roses to water-filled bubbles), gives this Klein Karoo farm quite a unique terrain. Where most of the Klein Karoo (and parts of the farm) is semi-desert, this little piece of earth, just a dot on the world map, boasts thousands of totally unique plants that co-exists with a very spectacular & distinctly different look. The Klein Karoo is rated under the top 10 most protected biodiversities in the world.

Towerkop – magic mountain

rooiberg-wild-towerkop_674x379

Snow on Towerkop (rough translation: Magic Mountain) is not a regular occurrence, so we were grateful to be there on the day it happened. Towerkop is one of the highest peaks near Ladismith and one of the most unique landscape features in the area. The story is told in many variations but roughly explains that a witch flew into the peak and then, out of anger and surprise, struck the mountain with her broom, thus causing the cleft in the peak.

There is also the extremely interesting story of the first brave climber to make it to the top, leaving a sock as evidence, but in scorn had to prove himself by climbing it again, this time with a team to claim his fame.

Also featured regularly in Langehoven’s (Afrikaans poet) work, the mountain gained even more fame. Ladismith is surrounded by mountains and is the ideal visiting place for climbers, from beginner to advanced. However, do take into account that mountains are dangerous and this should be attempted with a guide on all occasions.
